Latest Attack Shows Grams Campaign is Desperate

Duluth-Congressman Jim Oberstar says personal and negative attacks by his opponent cannot erase his record of service to Minnesota's 8th District. Last night, his challenger launched a new round of attacks during a debate on WDSE TV's Almanac North, televised in Duluth. Challenger Rod Grams claimed that Oberstar does not live in his Chisholm home. "That's a rotten lie," Oberstar told Grams. "And I'm not going to take it from you." In fact, Oberstar has lived in the Chisholm home built by his grandfather and father, since he was a boy.

Grams is attempting to shift the debate away from Oberstar's record of accomplishment for the 8th District. In the last session of Congress, Oberstar's influence gained a 46.1% in federal highway funding for the state of Minnesota. In the 8th District, he worked with local communities to fund dozens of badly needed transportation projects. "In addition to making roads safer in those communities and getting goods to market, these projects are creating nearly 9,000 jobs," said Oberstar.

"Rod Grams is introducing political sleaze to the 8th District and people here don't like it--they will tell him about it in the voting booth," said Oberstar.
