C-H-I-S-H-O-L-M Spells Chisholm
by Congressman James L. Oberstar

Appearing in Press Release on 2006-11-02.

Duluth—8th District Congressional Candidate Rod Grams is hoping to represent the City of Chisholm in Congress. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to know how to spell it.

Grams' campaign website posted an electronic version of a negative attack mailer that makes a false claim that U.S. Congressman Jim Oberstar’s home is not in Chisolm. Of course, the name of Oberstar’s hometown is spelled C-H-I-S-H-O-L-M. You can view the ad by following this link: http://rodgrams2006.com/MarylandMansion1a.pdf.

“He can’t spell it, and he certainly doesn’t understand the people who live there,” said Oberstar. “Chisholm is a town where people understand the value of a good education.”

Grams record on education matches his spelling:

• Grams voted against a bipartisan college tuition tax credit that would have allowed a tax deduction of up to $12,000 per year for 90 percent of all Americans. (Senate vote 241, 7/30/99)

• In addition to tax deductions to reduce the cost of tuition, Grams voted 5 times against the federal student loan program, cutting billions of dollars to the program. (Senate votes 175, 5/22/95; 231, 5/25/95; 584, 11/17/95; 159, 6/13/96; 6/13/96; 194, 7/9/98)

• In line with Grams’ desire to cut federal funding to our public schools, Grams supported the Gorton amendment in 1997, which would have eliminated financing that funded 22 school programs. Among the programs Grams supported eliminating are Safe & Drug Free Schools program, School-to-Work program, charter schools, teacher training grants, education technology (including grants to help schools buy computers), school construction/improvement grants, Native-American education grants, and bilingual education programs. (Senate vote 91, 4/22/98)

“If you want to represent a town in Congress, you have to know how to spell it,” said Oberstar.

Grams had the mailer designed by a California based firm. All of Oberstar’s advertising design and production is done in the 8th District.
