Oberstar re-elected, enthusiastic about future

Congressman Jim Oberstar had to go back more than 32 years when Jimmy Carter was elected president to recall the last time he was this optimistic about the future of the country.

“This is a transformational moment,” he said. “There are so many things we can do now.”

Oberstar’s re-election to Congress was almost an afterthought Tuesday night, easily winning over challenger Mike Cummins. Instead, Oberstar was looking forward to major transportation initiatives he believes can be pushed through the Senate and approved by the president, including major spending on Amtrak and passenger rail, modernizing the air traffic control system, and upgrading coast guard vessels.

“We have a year, year and a half window of opportunity,” he said. “Before the next midterm elections.”

Easily winning re-election has become old hat for Oberstar, who has served Minnesota’s 8th congressional district since 1974.

Oberstar gave no indications Tuesday night that he would quit anytime soon. “I’m chairman,” he said, referring to his powerful position on the House Transportation Committee. “This is a great opportunity.”

But he said being re-elected isn’t just about being an incumbent. “It’s the work and investment you put in, year in and year out,” he said.
